Choosing the right location for your family photo session can make all the difference — and in Ottawa, we’re lucky to have a wide range of beautiful outdoor spaces that work well year-round. Whether you’re looking for lush greenery, historic charm, or something a little off the beaten path, there’s a perfect spot for every family.

Here are some of my favourite outdoor locations in and around Ottawa for family photos:

The Ornamental Gardens

Located at the Central Experimental Farm, the Ornamental Gardens offer stunning floral backdrops throughout the warmer months. With beautifully maintained flower beds and garden paths, it’s a bright and elegant setting for timeless family portraits.

The Arboretum

A classic go-to, the Arboretum has something to offer in every season. It’s full of open grassy areas, mature trees, and beautiful light — especially during golden hour. There’s no shortage of variety here, but be prepared for busy weekends. Parking can be tricky on nice days, so plan accordingly.

Petrie Island

This location blends beach and nature for a relaxed, playful atmosphere. With shallow waters perfect for splashing and exploring, sandy paths, and a peaceful wooded area, it’s a great option for families who want a mix of candid moments and scenic views.

Château Laurier

If you love historic architecture and urban charm, this downtown location is a beautiful choice. The Château Laurier creates a timeless and refined backdrop — perfect when natural settings are still waking up in early spring or winding down in late fall.

Major’s Hill Park

Offering panoramic views of Chateau Laurier, Parliament Hill and the Ottawa River, Major’s Hill Park is both picturesque and iconic. It’s ideal for classic family portraits with a distinctly Ottawa feel, though it can get quite busy on warm days and during tourist season.

Brewer Park

A great choice for overcast or rainy days, the area under the Bronson Bridge at Brewer Park provides unique architectural elements and partial coverage from the weather. The space has a creative, urban vibe — including some graffiti, which we can incorporate or avoid depending on your style. There are also lots of nice trails.

Hog’s Back Park

This park offers a more adventurous setting with forested trails, open grassy areas, and views of waterfalls. For families with older children or those looking for a nature-forward feel, hiking closer to the water can lead to some dramatic and beautiful shots.

Dow’s Lake & Commissioner’s Park

Whether you’re visiting during tulip season or just enjoying the lakeside views, this location is full of charm. The combination of trees, water, and flower beds offers plenty of variety, and the light here — especially in the evening — is lovely.

Rideau Canal

In the winter, the Rideau Canal transforms into a magical backdrop. Skates, Beavertails, and cozy scarves make for fun, memorable images that capture the spirit of the season. It’s a true Ottawa classic for cold-weather sessions.

Tropical Greenhouses (Experimental Farm)

This is one of my favourite options at any time of year. The greenhouses offer beautiful light, greenery, and unique architectural elements.

Watson’s Mill, Manotick

This historic location features a stone mill, river views, and a charming small-town feel. It’s a quiet, scenic setting that works beautifully for families who want something classic and peaceful.

Mackenzie King Estate (Gatineau Park)

Set in the heart of Gatineau Park, the Mackenzie King Estate offers historic ruins, wooded paths, and expansive gardens. It’s a picturesque, storybook-style location — especially beautiful in spring and fall. Note: the estate is closed in the winter months.

Strathcona Park

Located in Sandy Hill along the Rideau River, Strathcona Park is a versatile and often overlooked spot. With mature trees, stone bridges, and wide open space, it’s great for families who want a relaxed, natural backdrop with fewer crowds.

Final Thoughts

Ottawa is full of incredible locations for family photography — from structured gardens to forest trails and historic buildings. Each spot has its own personality, and the best choice often depends on your family’s vibe and the kind of session you’re envisioning.

Not sure which location is the right fit for you? I’m always happy to chat through options and help you pick a backdrop that brings out the best in your crew.
